Introduction:

in Circa 2007 a man asked Votwo Events if he could run the Jurassic Coast Challenge (3 marathons in 3 days) in ‘One go’. We cant remember if we laughed or cried at the idea but the answer was of course ‘Yes’, and The ONER was born.

After a brief hiatus, during which our friends at Brutal Events took the reins and did a fantastic job, The ONER is back under the organization of Epic Endurance Events Ltd, with Votwo Events providing support.

Billed as one of the toughest foot races on the UK coastline the event sees about 100 runners take on the 85mile route within 24hrs. Run, walk or crawl was the original event slogan and it still stands today 16 years later.

Terrain and the route:

The Jurassic coast line is well known for its spectacular views and challenging hills. The route takes in a variety of terrain from coastal footpath to beaches and tracks. 

The start point is just outside Charmouth and the course runs from West to East. The ONER will finish at the National Trust Shell Bay Car Park, Studland. Many runners will be pleased to note the route still includes the whole circumnavigation of Portland. 

This is ardous costal route following the Jurassic Coast foot path. The route crosses exposed cliff areas and parts are undertaken in the hours of darkness.

If access to the planned is restricted for any reason (inc adverse weather) an alternative will be used where possible. This could take the form of a out and back route.

Event HQ:

This will act as a meeting point, catering area, massage/first aid point and reception. The Event HQ will be based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Free event carparking will be available at the event HQ.

Checkpoints (CPs):

These are located approximately every 10KM. At each CP you will be ‘checked’ in by the CP staff and your time logged. This means we know where you are on the course and if you are late for a checkpoint we can assist you. 

All the CPs will be stocked with energy bars, jelly babies, salty snacks, filled rolls, water, squash, and coke. The half way point will serve hot food and at the finish point a bowl of hot homemade soup will await you. The event medics will be available at the CPs.

Transportation:

Coachs will transport runners from the event HQ/carpark area to the start point and back again from the finish point to the HQ/carpark area. Mini busses will pick up any retired runners on the course and return them to the event HQ.

Checkpoint Cut Offs.

Particpants of the ONER are required to maintain a pace of no less than 5.8KMPH in order to complete the circa 140KM course is 24Hrs.

Any participant outside of this pace will be politely asked to retire from the event at a check point. Transport will be provided to repatriate them to the event HQ.

CP close times will be issued to you along with your actions on emergency card.

Medical assistance:

The course is covered by the medical support team. Every morning at challenge registration the medics will be available to sort out any blisters, tape feet up etc.

Kit list:

Whilst taking part in the ONER it is compulsory for you to carry the following equipment. This kit will be checked at the event registration. We will be enforcing the policy of no kit, no run. If the worst happens to you any of the below kit could really make a difference to your survival and wellbeing.

Essential kit: (to be carried on your person or in your rucksack)

  • A means of navigation  

  • Actions on sheet (issued at registration)

  • Whistle  

  • Compass (make sure your compass is attached to you or your kit)  

  • Waterproof top  

  • Long trousers or tights  

  • Gloves (waterproofed in a plastic freezer bag)  

  • Hat (waterproofed in a plastic freezer bag) 

  • Chocolate bar or similar  

  • Small torch with spare batteries  

  • More than 400ml of water or other drink  

  • A lightweight piece of warm clothing (waterproofed)  

  • A fully charged working mobile phone (waterproofed)

  • A notepad and pencil with your name and your mobile number written on it (waterproofed)

You must carry all the kit on the kit list. No exceptions.
