Introduction:

A new edition to the Atlantic Coast Challenge family of events. The route starts at Fistral Beach in Newquay and follows the coast all the way down to Hayle River Mouth and finishes at St Ives Bay Holiday Park. Complete the 40 miler by walking, running or crawling, pitting your mental and physical prowess against some of the wildest coastline in Britain. Votwo has teamed up with Geo Tracks. This system provides runners with a personal GPS tracker and navigation mobile phone app allowing them to accurately navigate the course and receive real-time positions of the other participants and themselves.

All finishers receive a bespoke event T-shirt and medal. Transport is provided from the event HQ to the start point and for retirees.

    Pre-event information pack:

    A link to the 2019 Atlantic Coast Ultra - 40Miler - event information will be posted below this text nearer the event date. All entrants are reminded to read the event information. It is a condition of entry to this event that you participate according to the instructions in the event information. We do send any event information or confirmations by post.

    Terrain:

    Wild and rugged. Steep climbs and descents that test your concentration as well as your strength. The course follows the South West Coast path which is marked by the Acorn sign. It's a very obvious well-worn route. The emphasis is on self-navigation. In most cases, it's as easy as keeping the sea on your right and the land on your left.

    Event HQ:

    This will act as a meeting point, catering area, massage/first aid point and reception. This will be open throughout the whole event to answer any questions, event merchandise sales or offer you some running advice. The Event HQ will be based at the St Ives Bay Holiday Park.

    Please note dogs/pets are not allowed at the HQ or in the accommodation. 

    Checkpoints (CPs):

    These are located approximately every 10KM. At each CP you will be ‘checked’ in by the CP staff and your time logged. This means we know where you are on the course and if you are late for a checkpoint we can assist you. 

    All the CPs will be stocked with energy bars, jelly babies, salty snacks, filled rolls, water, squash, coke, and hot drinks. At the finish point a bowl of hot homemade soup and a bread roll will await you. CP locations are marked on your Geo Tracks mapping app and CP close times will be issued to you along with your actions on the emergency card. The event medics will be available at the CP's.

    A minimum speed of 5km per hour needs to be maintained. Checkpoint cut off times will be published in the event information pack. 13 hours in total to compete circa 65km (40 miles). Any late runners will be retired from the event.

    Transportation:

    On completion of the event briefing held at the HQ you will be transported to the start by minibus. This takes approx 40 mins. 

    Medical assistance:

    The route is covered by our medical support. Please use the supplied phone numbers on your actions on sheet or report at a checkpoint. 

    Catering:

    On route catering is supplied at the checkpoints and is comprehensive.

    Breakfast and evening meals are available at the HQ. £6 for breakfast and £12 for evening meal and dessert (well worth running 40 miles for!).

    Kit list:

    Whilst taking part in the event it is compulsory for you to carry the following equipment. At registration, you will be asked to prove you have certain pieces of kit on the list. If you don’t have this kit you will not be allowed to participate in the event. We will be enforcing the policy of: No kit, no run. If the worst happens to you any of the below kit could really make the difference to yours and others survival and wellbeing.           

    Essential kit (to be carried on your person or in your rucksack)

    • Fully charged smartphone with the Geo Tracks app downloaded (waterproofed)
    • Spare full power pack and appropriate charger for your smartphone
    • Useful numbers, checkpoint timings, and lost procedure sheet 
    • Whistle  
    • Compass (make sure your compass is attached to you or your kit)  
    • Waterproof top  
    • Long trousers or tights (on you or waterproofed in your bag)
    • Gloves (waterproofed)  
    • Hat (waterproofed) 
    • A chocolate bar or similar  
    • Small torch with spare batteries  
    • More than 400ml of water or other drink  
    • A lightweight piece of warm clothing (waterproofed)  
    • A notepad and pencil with your name and your mobile number written on it (waterproofed)

    You must carry all the kit on the kit list. No exceptions. It may be on your person or rucksack. No kit = No run.
